FAA minimums establish eligibility for a practical test. Completion time and total cost still depend on proficiency, preparation, weather and lesson frequency.
- Hold the appropriate Private Pilot Certificate; an instrument rating is important for the privileges and limitations of professional airplane operations.
- FAA Part 61 eligibility for an airplane commercial certificate generally requires 250 hours total flight time plus specified pilot-in-command, cross-country, instrument and training experience.
- Pass the applicable FAA knowledge test and practical test and meet the eligibility requirements in current regulations.
- A logbook audit is the first step: the most efficient plan depends on which required experience you already have documented.
Training rate
$200–$249 per flight hour
Typical combined Piper Warrior II and instructor rate. Exact rate, lesson scope and any ground-instruction time are confirmed before training. Total program cost depends on your starting point, proficiency, preparation, weather and lesson frequency.

Does a Commercial Pilot Certificate qualify me for an airline job?
No. The commercial certificate permits certain compensated flying, but airlines and other employers require additional certificates, ratings and substantially more experience. It is an important professional milestone—not the end of the career path.
Can I train before reaching 250 hours?
Yes. A tailored plan can combine experience building with commercial-skill development, but you must satisfy all applicable aeronautical-experience requirements before the practical test.
