Eligibility and experience
Know the standards before you budget.
FAA minimums establish eligibility for a practical test. Completion time and total cost still depend on proficiency, preparation, weather and lesson frequency.
- FAA Part 61 minimum: 40 hours total flight time, including at least 20 hours of instructor training and 10 hours of solo training.
- Complete the required cross-country, night, instrument-reference and checkride-preparation experience.
- Pass the FAA knowledge test and practical test; meet applicable age, English-language, student-pilot and medical requirements.
- Most students need more than the regulatory minimum. Your actual plan is based on proficiency and continuity.
Training rate
$200–$249 per flight hour
Published combined Piper Warrior II and flight-instructor range. Your quote confirms the applicable rate, fuel inclusion, ground-instruction charges and any solo-aircraft rate before training. Total program cost depends on your starting point, proficiency, preparation, weather and lesson frequency.

The price covers the listed aircraft hours, fuel, dual instruction and ground instruction. Solo flights require instructor authorization and applicable aircraft-use eligibility. A package buys a defined training block; certification depends on meeting FAA experience and proficiency standards.
FAA medical examinations, knowledge tests, examiner and checkride fees, books, charts, headsets, additional flight or ground hours, and outside aircraft or training arrangements are separate. Build on the previous lesson, practice assigned skills and prepare on the ground between flights.

Review what you have learned, update your budget and set the next training goals. Milestones follow proficiency.
Example: two lessons each week
Eight lessons over four weeks, each with 1.3 flight hours, total 10.4 flight hours. At the published $200–$249 combined hourly range, the flight portion is $2,080–$2,589.60. Ground instruction, equipment and outside fees are not included in this illustration. Any discovery lesson is budgeted separately.

How quickly can I finish?
Your schedule, preparation and lesson frequency matter more than a marketing promise. Training multiple times per week generally supports continuity, but weather, maintenance, air traffic and individual proficiency affect the calendar.
Can I start with no experience?
Yes. A discovery lesson is optional but useful if you want to experience the aircraft, airport and teaching style before beginning regular training.
When do I need a medical certificate?
Most private-pilot students need an appropriate FAA medical certificate before solo flight. Address medical questions early so they do not interrupt progress later.
